How the Monsoon Actually Works

That moisture comes from the Southwest monsoon pattern: humid air flowing inland from the Gulf of California and Gulf of Mexico during summer, rising over heated desert land, condensing into afternoon and evening thunderstorms that can be brief and violent.

The extreme heat warning that dominated the first two weeks of August, with temperatures peaking at 117 degrees and overnight lows staying near 90, was driven by a persistent high-pressure ridge over the Southwest. That ridge has weakened enough to allow Pacific and monsoon moisture to move in, producing the temperature drop and storm activity of mid-August. National Weather Service meteorologist Ashley Nickerson said the low-pressure system was helping cool the valley and should keep temperatures below the historical average of 103 degrees for the next several days.

But the valley’s extreme heat watch was being reissued as early as Tuesday of the following week, with above-normal temperatures forecast to return. The pattern for the remainder of August looks like alternating periods of monsoon moisture and returning heat, rather than a sustained cool-down. That’s a typical late-monsoon pattern for Southern Nevada, where the season’s most active storm window typically runs from mid-August through mid-September before the pattern breaks down heading into fall.

NOAA’s forecast of above-normal precipitation probability for August and September, while not a guarantee of any specific event, suggests the conditions for additional monsoon activity remain favorable. Whether that translates into valley floor rainfall sufficient to push the airport’s annual totals meaningfully above average depends on how well individual storm cells track across the valley rather than staying concentrated over mountain terrain.

The Long View

Two weeks of extreme heat followed by back-to-back monsoon flood advisories in the same month is, in one sense, exactly what Las Vegas summer looks like every year. The desert has always produced dramatic temperature swings and intense storm events. That’s the climate this city was built into.

What’s different in 2026 is the degree. The extreme heat event of late July and early August was more intense than historical baselines and pushed toward all-time record territory. The monsoon, when it finally arrived, was more delayed than typical. The rainless streak of 124 days that ended June 23 was historically unusual. These aren’t random variations around a stable mean. They’re consistent with the documented warming and drying trend that has made Las Vegas the fastest-warming city in America.

The flood control infrastructure that managed August’s storms was built for the historical pattern. It will need to handle a shifting pattern going forward, with more intense individual storm events potentially delivering the same annual precipitation volume in fewer, larger bursts, placing greater instantaneous demand on detention basins and flood channels designed for a different distribution of rainfall.

For now, the valley got its rain. Temperatures dropped. The football game in Henderson got rescheduled. The airport cleared its ground stop. The flood advisories lifted.
